ist eine junge frau aus dem tazza. sie arbeitet dort und war mal auf einem kleinen barbecue in unserem backyard gesessen. damals hatte ich keine lust mit ihr zu reden. mit der zeit sind wir aber immer oefter ins tazza gegangen, bis ich mich irgendwann zu ihr hingezoen gefuehlt hatte. sie gehoert zu dem typ von frauen, die versuchen knochentrocken zu wirken und hart zu sein, und sie sind es vielleicht auch. man weiss das ja erst wenn man sie naeher kennt. ich hab ihr heute ein kleines geschenk gemacht. in deutschland hatten wir das ab und zu mit christian mal gemacht, schoenen frauen eine blume schenken. normalerweise freuen sie sich. die hier hatte so ihre probleme mit meinem geschenk. ich glaube, sie war arg verstoert, als sie ihr geschenk entgegen nahm. ich hatte ja mit einer derartigen reaktion gerechnet, naechste woche betrete ich bundesgebiet und bin wieder sehr froh darueber, hatte mir also nichts erwartet. allison ist klein und zierlich und hat einige schwarze haarstraehnen, die rechts und links der schlaefen lose mit klammern fixiert sind und unterhalb des kinns in verschiedene richtungen zeigen, hinter dem kopf sind sie zu einem pferdeschwanz gebunden. sie traegt ihre haare nie offen. ihre augen sind blaugrau und ihre nase ist ganz leicht nach oben gebogen, so dass man nie weiss, ob es tatsaechlich so ist, was ihr etwas hexenhaftes gibt; alle formen ihres gesichtes sind ganz leicht nach aussen gebogen, ohne dabei zu scharf zu wirken, was diesen eindruck limitiert. auch ihr mund hat nichts engelhaftes, sondern signalisiert die bereitschaft, nichts von sich preis zu geben. sie scheint stets darum bemueht, moeglichst ausdruckslos und aufrecht zu gehen. meistens traegt sie einen knielangen rock und schwarze, lederne halbschuhe, die an der seite mit einer schnalle fixiert werden. seitdem es kaelter wird, traegt sie darunter wollstrumpfhosen. wenn sie die bestellung aufnimmt, neigt sich ihr kopf und schiebt auf dem hals etwas nach vorne, der ruecken neigt sich leicht nach hinten. meist bleibt sie dabei ernst und lacht nur, wenn sie dazu aufgefordert wird.

social bookmarking ist ein projekt, bei dem mehrere ihre links online sammeln. ich finde das superspannend, es koennen im anschluss spannende visualisierungen entstehen. als ich in den vergangenen wochen die tufte buecher endlich mal in ruhe lesen konnte, wurde mir klar, wie wichtig es ist, 'gute' daten zu haben. tufte sagt, nicht durch die varianz in design und darstellung ist qualitaet zu erzielen, sondern durch die varianz der daten. in diesem sinn scheint es sehr wichtig, bookmarks klar zu taggen. einige ueberlegungen hierzu:

.a. es sollte ein parent-child system geben, nach dem jeder tag ein oder mehrere elterntags hat. vielleicht auch elternbilder...

.b. macht es sinn, tags eine lebensdauer zu geben? sollten sie sterben, sobald sie nicht mehr benutzt werden bzw auch links sterben, wenn sie nicht mehr geklickt werden?
oder bei einer visualisierung die links einfach gemaess ihrer benutzung darstellen?

.c. kann es verschiedene tag-muster geben, deren abraham-tags jeweils auf bestimmte wahrnehmungsfelder/eigenschaftsfelder referieren? beispiel: hell/dunkel, warm/kalt, laut/leise, weich/hart, suess/sauer/salzig/scharf, sicher/unsicher als sinnesfeld,
oder mehrere eigenschaftsfelder zur zusammenstellung eines eigenschaftskataloges; beispiel: wie fuehlt es sich an? was ist es? welche technologien nutzt es? wer kann davon profitieren? also ein katalog, bei dem die tags eines feldes vielleicht jeweils antworten auf interessante fragen sein koennten.

vor einiger zeit gab es wohl das projekt sendet uns die schlechtesten witze die ihr kennt und wir als vormals ernst zu nehmendes nachrichtenorgan kueren dann die schlechtesten witze deutschlands. ich finde das projekt daneben. jeder hat einen anderen humor, die nihilistischsten sind eh immer die besten, und wo das konnotat sich sonnen geht, kann man nur unter vorbehalt bewerten. den hier fand ich zum beispiel gut:

Ein Terrorist kommt am Münchner Flughafen an. Der Zöllner bittet ihn, seine Koffer aufzumachen. Der von der langen Reise übermüdete Terrorist lässt sich beim Öffnen seiner Koffer viel Zeit. Der Zöllner wird ungeduldig und fragt: "Jo, wos is jetzat? Hamas?" Antwortet der Terrorist: "Nein, Dschihad." Meint der Zöllner: "Gesundheit."

der zoellner sagt gesundheit, was eine nette skizze bayerischer einfalt ist. ob sie ein anachronismus ist, sei dahingestellt. das bild, was hier bedient wird, existiert immer noch in den koepfen der gesellschaft. also? wo ist das schlechte?

Ruft die Krankenschwester: "Herr Doktor, Herr Doktor! Der Simulant in Zimmer 7 ist gestorben." Darauf der Doktor: "Langsam übertreibt er aber..."

ist vielleicht ein schlechter witz. ihn jedoch in die kategorie der worst20 zu stecken ist ein wenig uebertrieben. die richtige taktik waere ja gewesen, ein witzebuch aus den 50ern ausfindig zu machen und kurzerhand die allerflachesten die man nur drin finden kann einzusenden. vielleicht war dieser kandidat ja auf die idee gekommen:

Verlangt ein Mann auf dem Wochenmarkt "zwei Pfund Tomaten". Erwidert der Händler: "Das heißt jetzt Kilo." Staunt der Mann: "Ach was, nicht mehr Tomaten?"

auch hier wieder-der witz ist nicht wirklich schlecht. nur ist allein schon das setting des wochenmarktes kein ort an dem man sich wirklich gern aufhalten wuerde. allerdings ist am schlimmsten die unterstellung, der mann waere nicht in der lage, grosse bedeutungsveraenderungen im deutschen sprachschatz auch ohne den marktschreier zu registrieren. das ist wirklich schlecht. auch sollte es immer die letzte wahl sein, mit der dummeheit zu kokettieren.

der hier wird wohl das rennen machen, allein schon, um kind und kreation zu diskriminieren, denn man mag sich gern:

Was ist rot mit zwei grünen Streifen und fährt rauf und runter? - Zwei Tomaten mit Hosenträgern im Fahrstuhl.

at 6th of november, i saw ben fry, the ominous maker of processing, for a lecture. he is so modest and calm that it is almost impossible to tell he is an american citizen.

he was showing all his interresting work so far, including anemone and the textvisualizations in space which were used in minority report to show off. its fun. today, the blender teacher told me that fry is actually a politically interrested man which you could certainly not tell from the way he is creating his work. hes participating in democratic petitions against the gouvernment. besides, it was surprising to see that he is in fact also a western nerd since he wore cowboy-boots and a embroidered shirt. the cutting-edge questions of young sophomore risd kids he was countering without beeing impressed at all. but what would you answer if somebody would ask you why you choose the term 'computational information design' instead of 'computational information art'? maybe 'its not too late, young man, but you have to give me all your money immediately, otherwise i will take care about your reputation' which scared him probably to death. even better though was 'are you considering your work as beautiful?' like a young italian lady put it. this was actually the only single moment during the whole lecture when ben did not know what to say any more, at least for ten seconds. it was hilarious. but anyway. thank you ben.

thanksgiving in new york

last week, some of the group went to new york after bobo, our maya teacher, invited us to stay a few days at his place. it was fun. we now all know a few bars more arround bedford street in brooklyn. for thanksgiving, we were buying a huge turkey and two ducks and made a banquet which was great. thank you new york.

during our one-week break, we (mario, stefan, me and sebastian) were cruising along the east coast. no. it is a lie. we did not see the coast at any time[...]
but besides that fact, it was a really interesting trip. i lost my viginity and went into a strip club in boston (yeah, a strip club). it was totally annoying besides the fact that two breasts and so on make at least a little visual sensation to every man that is not totally spaced out. businessmen dressed like crocodiles, throwing money at naked women. its simply disgusting. but hey what did i expect right? after spending a night in the president motel near boston, we then went down to washington to do an one-day sightseeing tour. we saw the capitol, the white house, the president (seriously), his dog, the most beautiful women since our arrival and the lincoln monumentum and other interesting things. then we went back to nyc to greenwich
village to experience the most beautiful event ever: a live funk performance with ten hilarious people on stage, getting everything out of a marvellous and appreciating audience. what more can you expect? i almost cried. at arround eight oclock we returned to providence, rather run down but culturally enriched by experiences we certainly would never have made here in providence.

gestern abend hatte joachim sauter im auditorium der risd eine kleine persoenliche historie neuer mediengestaltung gegeben, von bildschirmgestaltung ueber interface design zu interior design und interaktiver architektur. es war spannend, ihn reden zu hoeren, zu mal vor einem amerikanischen publikum, das vor allem mit skalpellartiger praezision versuchte, ihm die ein oder andere wortlogische inkonsequenz zu unterstellen und damit ihre kritikfaehigkeit unter beweis zu stellen.

sauter reagierte cool, fast muede. die praktische unterscheidung von kunst und design traf voll ins schwarze, niemand fand sie wirklich tragfaehig und somit fand eine kurze diskussion im anschluss an seinen vortrag statt. sein hauptsatz des abends der da auf dem mac os panther desktop auftauchte, zielte darauf ab, dass neue mediengestaltung nicht retinal, sondern qualitativ bestechen muesse. dem kann man nur zustimmen. schoen dass es mal einer so klar formuliert, wenngleich man dort abgeholt wird, wo man als gestalter schon steht.

today i had lunch with tim who is a musician and composer i learned to know in the red room. while we were sitting outside having conversation, a parade of people with little cars passed by. they had all different kinds of miniatures of cars. they had a round circuit on which several ramps were installed so they could jump over with their little cars. it was a pretty surreal impression to me. they are called shriners.

I wonder whether there is a similar icon for blinds in germany, not in general but particularly the head really seems to standardize a mindset of sadness for all disabled people. last week we went to boston and visited Fidelity Usability Lab there. it was pretty interesting. we saw blind people sitting in a cosy lab in front of a computer, testing the new screenreading system that was developed at the FUL. therewith, blinds can control the speed a synthesized voice system is reading out aloud webpages contents. i dont want to spend more than two minutes in a room of ten blinds surfing the internet since they are setting up the speed probably as high as possible so it in the end sounds like an infernality. demonizing the blind-that cannot be a good solution. the main argument that argues for that system was the availability between blind people-most of them seem to already own a screenreader. i had the idea to develop something like a brailleboard with little uprisings that show the different tags on a webpage. that would at least provide the opportunity to give a synchronal kind of inpression to the blinds hands. we had to get up at 5 and went back as soon as our visit at the FUL was over.

for the last few days we went sailing with ivas brothers boat 'sundowner'. it has 38ft and is single-masted. it was amazing. we started friday night at 4am and then arrived at a place near jamestown where we would stay for the whole time. petar has a small motorboat attached to his boat which was good for a bit of wave-hopping. it is called dingy which originally means something like 'schaebig'. it took ne a while until i was able to cope with the dizzyness that occurs when laying inside the boat. i enjoyed swimming in the ocean and beeing lazy on the deck.

scheinbar unter den nerdlingen und wissenschaftlern allgemein sehr verbreitet, mir bis dato jedoch unbekannt: ein editor, der das programmieren von layout ermoeglicht.
oft wuenscht man sich, die dinge etwas automatisieren zu koennen, zb projektdokumentationen oder auch automatisierte dokumentationen von webblogs, die man dann spaeter ausdrucken wollen wuerde. ich habe mit stefan gesprochen und er hat seine masterarbeit damit geschrieben.

yesterday, i finally went to see the offers of the salvation army(heilsarmee).
they have an office on pitman street which is on eastside. from kennedy plaza, its just ten minutes by bus. you can buy alot of used stuff there like furniture, clothes, golf clubs and even whole golf sets, bikes and so on. i then bought a bamboo chair, a very little desk and an office chair. at salvation army, they used to deliver things if it had been necesary. when i tried to buy my stuff and give the order for the furniture to be delivered, i just learned that things had changed. fortunately, i was offered a ride by a very nice couple that had nothing to do that saturday, so they delivered me and my things. after a quick inspection of the cushion for that bamboo chair, it was obvious that it would be better to get out all of those fat-americans-farts-into-the-cushion-tracks and those sweating-marks. but how to clean a cushion of that size without getting poor? first, i mixed up the dryer with the washing machine, probably because the cushion could be placed inside and besides that i am not used to washing machines having their door on top. since this ended up just in the cushion beeing nicely slavert with cleaning agent, i placed it in the bathtub and tried to wash it there. it felt like a dead body then, due to all the water inside. i could barely turn it arround. since the sun is shining again again today, i try to weather it in the backyard, lying aside and reading new york times.

every time you eat things out of one of these paperbags, you might have been too lazy that morning. the coffee tastes like after public-opinion poll of dunking donuts, all participants were claiming that a good coffee tastes at least a bit burned. so dunking donuts then decided not to search for a coffee powder that would taste burnt, but to just add some artifical tastes-like-real-burnt-aroma to the coffee. the result is a not-drinkable, bader that institutes` coffee tasting stock.

this is the neighbourhood arround federal hill. it is not the best area arround providence, but is has little spanish shops where you could probably buy some tacos even at 12pm. the good thig with the big supermarkets here is that theyre mostly opened until ten or twelve. the bad thing is that you need about between one and two hours to get out again. in the largest ones, there are little caddy cars for all the fat people so they dont get a time problem...

the bordcake of air france was so ridiculously sweet that you could not eat a single bit of it. first i was considering about to maybe find a bit of vanilla pudding inside but then it turned out to be more like a massive piece of almond paste and that after a fine main entree which was salmon tortellini with lemon grass saussage. god bless air france.
